Project Overview
Role: Ux designer
Timeline: 9 months (including implementation)
Tools Used: Figma, Miro, Confluence
Objective
Continue sunsetting Participant web to provide a more seamless and complex Flex experience. Through new functionality, help participants access all their 401(k) investment information via the native mobile app, with 24/7 access. Deliver customizable RoRs to support Paychex revenue generation.
Why did we work on this
Maintaining Classic and Flex leads to the over-allocation of resources and additional complexity when requesting an enhancement
We needed to move and enhance both transaction and statement functionality within Flex so that participants no longer need to " switch to classic" to access their statements.
The absence of transaction detail in Flex and customizable RoRs has hampered sales; 401(k) participants expect this information to be available in their plans.
Classic is accessible only via the participant's desktop, limiting mobile functionality and account access.
Research & discovery
User Research
Our UX team interviewed 5 Paychex users to gather feedback on the existing Account History in Classic. I collaborated with our UX researcher to design the interview questions and attended the sessions as a listener. Afterward, the researcher analyzed the findings, which I used to inform my design process. After the first iteration, we conducted usability tests and went through a couple of rounds of iteration and testing to refine and finalize the designs.
Key Insights
The activity layout lacked clarity, causing confusion for users.
Users found many of the available date ranges unnecessary and unhelpful.
There was a strong need for more organized and quarterly transaction reports, as users preferred to download them in this format.
Persona
Our users are employees eligible to contribute to a retirement account and are actively saving for their future. Some benefit from employer matching contributions. These users lead busy lives and value convenience, seeking simple, efficient ways to manage their retirement savings. They prefer tools that allow them to quickly monitor and adjust their accounts without requiring significant time or effort.
Ideation & concept development
After gathering the requirements in a meeting with the Product team and diving deep into the workflow for the ideation phase, I began by outlining all the task scenarios. This helped me create detailed workflows for each scenario. I then developed low-fidelity wireframes to enable quick iterations and allow for efficient product reviews, ensuring we could rapidly refine ideas and get early feedback.
